Anderson Maguire Supports Demystifying Death Week

As Scotland’s leading independent family funeral directors, we proactively support the community we serve by signposting them to all the help which is available to help them throughout a hugely distressing time. As part of this support, we are taking part in the conversation this week on our social channels with Good Life Good Death Good Grief as they launch Demystifying Death Week (10-16 May), which will shine a light on death, dying and bereavement in Scotland.

People usually want to do the right thing when someone they know is caring, dying or grieving. But often they can feel awkward offering help, or worry about making things worse.

People can have questions about serious illness or death. But often they don’t know who to ask.

Making plans when you’re healthy means there is less to think about when you’re ill. But often people put off making plans until it is too late.

Demystifying Death week is about giving people knowledge, skills and opportunities to plan and support each other through death, dying, loss and care.

Good Life, Good Death, Good Grief

The week was initiated by Good Life, Good Death, Good Grief – a charity-led collaboration of more than 1000 individuals and organisations that want Scotland to be a place where people can be open about and plan for death, dying and bereavement.

“If people know a bit more about death and dying, they’re in a better position to take control of their own situation, support others, make plans and have informed decisions about what they’d want when the time comes.” said Rebecca Patterson, Director of Good Life, Good Death, Good Grief.

“Sometimes people worry about things, like what to say to someone who’s been bereaved, or being refused CPR. Perhaps having more information about these could help people worry less.

“There are lots of resources out there that provide information, but sometimes it is difficult to know where to look. We want to make this information easier for people to get at, and we’ll sharing a lot of it this week using the hashtag #DemystifyDeath.”

This will include information on the kinds of preparations people can make if they are worried their health may get worse, for example by making a Power of Attorney and talking to the people close to them about an anticipatory care plan. They will also be sharing tips on how ordinary people can provide informal support to a friend or family member who is caring, dying or grieving, and places people can go for more formal support.

New short films

The week sees the launch of six short films, each aiming to demystify a different aspect of death, dying or bereavement. The ‘60 second shorts’ tackle head-on questions such as ‘What do children want to know about death?’, ‘How can I support a young person who’s bereaved?’ and ‘How might someone’s breathing change when they are dying?’.

Events

As well as an online media campaign, various online events are taking place during the week, for example, Say Something Dundee has plans for a Conversation Café, inviting locals to join in a relaxed, informal discussion around local experiences of death, dying, loss and care. The Compassionate Friends invites people to Say their name, to learn more about how to support parents and siblings who have been bereaved. A community in North Berwick will be welcoming community members to an online Armchair Chat, with a combination of music, discussion and input from Kathryn Mannix, author of the book With the end in mind.

A full list of events is available here: https://www.goodlifedeathgrief.org.uk/blogs/demystifying-death-week-2021/

“We’re often told that death is a ‘taboo’ – something that people don’t want to talk about.’ said Rebecca Patterson, Director of GLGDGG. ‘But surveys show that in Scotland most people are actually fairly comfortable talking about death. Perhaps the right opportunities just don’t present themselves. Demystifying Death week is a chance to open up about death, air these topics and become a bit better at supporting each other through these difficult times.”

Glasgow Funeral Company Host First Online Memorial Service

Glasgow’s leading independent family funeral company, Anderson Maguire, hosted the first online Memorial Service for more than 300 families from across Scotland with family and friends joining online from the United States, Australia and Japan amongst others.

Organised by Chairman Dom Maguire, the event was an opportunity for families to join together from across the globe to hear their loved one’s name read out and a candle lit in their memory.

Dom Maguire, Chairman of Anderson Maguire Funeral Directors, said:

“We know many people have not been able to have the funeral service they want or deserve for their loved one in recent months.

“We wanted to provide an Online Memorial Service to provide some solace to families and an opportunity for all those who have been bereaved to come together as a community and honour their loved one.

“The last few months have also been incredibly challenging for us as funeral directors. Our natural instincts are to reach out to all those bereaved through physical touch and our inability to do that will continue for some time yet. We hope that our words and actions are testament to how much we care.”

The loss of anyone from our lives at any time is difficult, although dealing with the practical aspects of arranging a funeral is normally quite straightforward.

However, due to the ongoing emergency, things are much more complex. We will do our best now to help you deal with matters and so assist you to arrange things as efficiently as possible during the present disruption.

If the death of your loved one has taken place at home, care environment or in hospital and a death certificate (MCCD – Form 11) has been issued, the doctor will send this electronically to the Registrar in your local area. The doctor will then send the hard copy by post to the registrar. (Should the death be reported to the Procurator Fiscal we will liaise with them and keep you informed as to the progress of matters).

In the interim, one of our staff will send you a pro forma questionnaire asking the questions the Registrar would normally ask. You can either complete this and return or if it is easier, we can speak with you by phone and ask the questions.

We can also then begin to arrange the actual funeral. In line with the policy being adopted by most funeral companies and in an attempt to stay within social distancing guidelines, we would prefer to do this remotely, by telephone and/or e-mail.

There are a number of services which have been withdrawn from normal protocols associated with traditional funeral arrangements;

No limousines
No floral tributes – we will provide silk artificial flower arrangements for all funerals free of charge.
Restricted numbers attending at crematorium or cemetery.
No family bearers

However, you can still, at this time, choose a coffin (a brochure will be sent electronically or by post), pay your respects at strategic funeral home locations, within our temporary pandemic guidelines, but once again with restricted numbers attending. Your funeral arranger will furnish you with our temporary pandemic guidelines on paying of respects during the arrangement process.

Because extended family and friends are unable to attend, we will be offering bereaved families an obituaries page on our website. This will allow family and friends the opportunity to express their sympathy and perhaps add a little tribute.

We will contact the crematorium or cemetery you wish to use and the officiant or celebrant you would like to officiate at the service. Once a day and time has been confirmed we will notify you.

Please be assured that all our staff will endeavour to offer you the best service and compassionate care they can in what are becoming extremely difficult and challenging times.

Feel free to contact us at any time on 0141 423 4400 or email: info@andersonmaguire.co.uk

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at all times.

We will continue to operate with the highest standards of care, compassion and empathy as normal, however, in line with the current social distancing and self-isolation guidelines we have received, we will need to make changes on how we undertake our funeral practices.

In caring for bereaved families, we will do everything we can possibly do for you and your loved ones with due care, compassion and dignity to all. We know that this crisis may, unfortunately, limit the type of service we can provide, however, we are committed to reduce the spread of this virus in line with government restrictions.

As such, we must all work together to achieve this and our utmost priority is to provide a duty of care to bereaved families, our staff, our own families and the wider community.

Funeral services will currently continue to take place for all, however, these may be curtailed and will be dependent on the individual circumstances of each family. In line with current government guidance, we will work with families of all faiths and none, to provide a fitting and loving service for your loved one.

At present, funeral services will have limited mourners in attendance and these services should be classified as “Private Funerals”. Messages of sympathy for families can be published through https://www.funeralguide.co.uk/obituaries.

We will be advising all families to make their homes “Strictly Private” to limit the number of visitors.

At this time, all hand-shaking and physical contact should be avoided for the safety of all concerned.

In certain circumstances, family funeral arrangements may need to be made with families via a telephone conversation or video conferencing and electronic means.

In these unprecedented times, we would like to reassure everyone that we will do everything we can and more to support and help you through this very difficult period.

Should any family have any concerns or questions, hopefully these guidelines will enable you to respond whilst appreciating the circumstances we are all experiencing.

We will continue to monitor and update these guidelines as the situation evolves and as we receive new government guidelines.

Each and everyone of you is in our thoughts and prayers. Please understand that we too are finding it very difficult not to be able to offer physical solace at this time, however, we hope our ongoing commitment to caring for you at your time of need is evident in our words and actions.
