Carmunnock girl, Shannon Doherty, is spending this year fundraising for her trip to Malawi with Holyrood Secondary School and after putting out an appeal to local businesses, Anderson Maguire Funeral Directors, donated £250 to Shannon’s fund.

Shannon is part of a team of 36 young people chosen for 2013 and will continue the work done by Holyrood in Malawi.  A partnership which has been described by Lord MacConnell, Former First Minister, as one of the very best examples of a Scotland / Malawi partnership.

For 5 consecutive years a group of senior pupils has made the trip to Malawi and so far, have constructed 11 new classrooms and refurbished a further 10 in our partner schools. Thus, the learning environment for a large number of children has been improved.

Liam McCarron, Managing Director of Anderson Maguire, commented:

“We have a very strong corporate ethos of helping out the communities which we work in and we are delighted to be able to help Shannon in her fundraising efforts.  I was one of the first people in Scotland to visit the LaSallian community in 1992 and helped to build a school in Tamil Nadu, Southern India.  It is vital that we continue to help those a lot less fortunate than ourselves”

Holyrood works in close partnership with the charity, Mary’s Meals, whose ambition is to feed the starving children of the world but only in a place of education. As a result, the partner schools are well attended and children receive a life saving daily meal and invaluable education.   Accommodation is, however, critically short and in extremely poor condition.
